Energy Saving Grants Just Got Better: Here’s What’s New for Your Home

Big changes have been made to the Government’s energy-saving grant schemes, and that’s great news if you’re looking to improve your home, lower your bills, or make your space warmer and greener.

At One Energy, we’re here to guide you through what’s new and help you find out what support you’re entitled to, with no jargon, no hassle, and no pressure.

The Government currently offers two main schemes to help households upgrade their homes. ECO4 helps low-income and vulnerable households get energy-saving upgrades like insulation, new heating systems, and solar panels. GBIS, short for the Great British Insulation Scheme, is a newer scheme that focuses on insulation and is open to more people, including those not on benefits but in homes that could use a boost.

So, what’s changed?

More flexibility under the Great British Insulation Scheme

You can now receive two types of insulation under GBIS. Previously, only one measure per home was allowed, but now you could qualify for, say, both loft and cavity wall insulation. This means better comfort, greater energy savings, and a bigger impact from the scheme.

More access to Solar Panels

Solar panels are now available to more homes. Under ECO4, solar PV systems can now be installed in homes that are on the gas grid, as long as the household is switching to electric-based heating like high heat retention storage heaters or a heat pump. This significantly expands access to solar energy.

New scoring providing more flexibility

ECO4 has introduced a new scoring system that allows homes to receive support even if they don’t qualify for a full package of upgrades. In the past, some homes missed out because they couldn’t meet the minimum improvement requirements. Now, if only one measure is completed, like just the insulation or a single heating upgrade, that property may still be eligible for funding. This change means that more households can now access help, even if they only need one or two key improvements.an before.

These changes matter because energy bills remain high, and many UK homes are not energy efficient. These grants are a real opportunity to make your home more comfortable and affordable to run, at little or no cost to you.

Could I Qualify?

You might qualify if:

  • You’re receiving certain benefits
  • You have a low household income (£31,000 or less)
  • You live in a home that’s cold, draughty, or hard to heat
  • You live in a property in Council Tax bands A to D (or A to E in Scotland and Wales)

You don’t need to be on benefits to qualify for some forms of help, and in many cases, tenants in private rented homes can apply too.

At One Energy, we handle everything from eligibility checks and grant applications to surveys and installation. If you think you might qualify, or know someone who might, get in touch today. It’s free, it only takes a few minutes, and it could save you hundreds of pounds each year.
